AFTERCARE

NHS-affiliated guidance  for tattoo aftercare focuses on treating the new tattoo as an open wound to prevent infection.

Key Recommendations

Keep Covered: Keep the initial dressing on for 1–3 hours (or up to 24 hours for medical tattoos).

Cleaning: Wash the tattoo gently with warm water and mild, fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean paper towel; do not rub.

Moisturising: Apply a thin layer of recommended ointment (such as Bepanthen) 2–3 times daily.

Avoid Submerging: Do not soak in baths, jacuzzis, or swimming pools for 2–3 weeks (or up to 4 weeks for medical tattoos).

No Sun: Avoid direct sunlight and sunbeds for at least 2 weeks.

Clothing: Wear loose, cotton clothing to avoid friction.

Healing Process: Do not pick or scratch any scabs, as this can cause infection or color loss.

Blood Donation: Wait 4 months after a new tattoo before giving blood.

Signs of Infection
Seek medical attention if you experience increasing redness, swelling, extreme pain, or yellow/green discharge.

Medical Tattoo Specifics

MRI Scans: Inform radiologists if you have had medical tattooing.

Laser Treatment: Avoid laser hair removal on the area as it can turn the pigment black.

Always follow the specific instructions provided by your practitioner, as they may differ based on the size and location of the tattoo.
